Cocktail: Cowtown Fashioned

Cocktail: Cowtown Fashioned

According to Lauren Mote, Co-Proprietor of Bittered Sling Extracts and Bar Manager at UVA Wine & Cocktail Bar, there are few things that scream “cowboy” more than an old fashioned. Lauren’s ‘Cowtown Fashioned’ cocktail truly embodies the pride of the prairies, with a healthy dose of Alberta Premium rye whiskey, lightly sweetened and with a hint of bitterness. Aside from neat whisky in a tumbler, it doesn’t get more quintessentially Albertan than this — sip on it with your hat slung low!

Ingredients:

2.00 oz (60mL) Alberta Premium “Dark Horse” Canadian Rye Whisky
0.50 oz (15mL) Mace & Nutmeg Syrup*
2 dashes Bittered Sling Plum & Rootbeer Bitters

Method:

Stir all ingredients gently with ice for 10-15 seconds. Strain into an old fashioned
glass with a large ice cube, and garnish with a lemon cheek.

*Mace & Nutmeg Syrup (makes 1L)

600g white sugar
600g water
10g nutmeg, toasted and crushed
10g mace, toasted

Toast spices in a medium saucepan until you can “smell” them (about 2 minutes).
Remove from heat, and crush them with a mortar and pestle. Meanwhile, bring the sugar and water to a low simmer. Add the mace and nutmeg, and remove from heat. Allow to steep for 12 hours at room temperature. Strain the spices out, and bottle in a clean, sanitized container for 7-10 days while refrigerated.
